The Boy from Baby House 10: From the Nightmare of a Russian Orphanage to a New Life in America

Product Description

In 1990, a young boy afflicted with cerebral palsy was born, prematurely, in Russia. His name was Vanya. His mother abandoned him to the state childcare system and he was sent to a bleak orphanage called Baby House 10. Once there, he entered a nightmare world he was not to leave for more than eight years. Housed in a ward with a group of other children, he was clothed in rags, ignored by most of the staff and given little, if any, medical treatment. He was finally, and cruelly, confined for a time to a mental asylum where he lived, almost caged, lying in a pool of his own waste on a locked ward surrounded by psychotic adults. But, that didn’t stop Vanya.

Even in these harsh conditions, he grew into a smart and persistent young boy who reached out to everyone around him. Two of those he reached out to—Sarah Philps, the wife of a British journalist, and Vika, a young Russian woman—realized that Vanya was no ordinary child and they began a campaign to find him a home. After many twists and turns, Vanya came to the attention of a single woman living in the United States named Paula Lahutsky. After a lot of red tape and more than one miracle, Paula adopted Vanya and brought him to the U.S. where he is now known as John Lahutsky, an honors student at Freedom High School in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and a member of the Boy Scouts of America Order of the Arrow.

In The Boy From Baby House 10, Sarah’s hus band, Alan Philps, helps John Lahutsky bring this inspiring true-life story of a small boy with a big heart and an unquenchable will to readers everywhere.

International Adoption ? On Increasing Trend!

International adoption is a kind of adoption, through which a couple or an individual becomes the permanent and legal parent of a child, who is born in some other country. Generally, prospective parents must fulfill the legal adoption requirements of the child’s nation as well as country of their own.

The necessary requirements for beginning the international adoption process vary, depending up on the country of parent. For instance, in most of the countries, adoptive parents are required to get approval first, while in few, either state agency or private adoption agency approves the adoption. In case of the United States, the first stage of the process begins with selection of an international adoption agency. Each agency works with a particular group of countries, though few focus on only one country. Some countries permit independent adoption, which is least costly and the parent does not need to contact an agency to complete the whole process. However, adoption is a tough process for the first time adopting parents.

Country wise, the laws differs, and is dependent up on nation’s willingness and openness to international adoption. Few countries, like Korea and China have established procedures and rules for international adoption, while many African nations forbid it. Some of the African nations have extended residency requirements for the parents, which in fact rule out international adoptions. One of the examples is Malawi, where residency is required for adopting a child.

Some of the African nations like Ethiopia are very much open to international adoption. That is why Ethiopian Adoption has become a popular option for the American families. As per the U.S. Department of State, in the year 2005, 441 orphans’ visas were issued to Ethiopian children, while in 2006 the number of visas increased to 732.

Apart from China and korea, Philippines is an another Asian nation, which has flexible international adoption policy. According to U.S. State Department, Philippines adoption reached to the number 265 during 2007.

Hence, by looking at the statistics given below we can conclude that international adoption is on its increasing trend-

According to U.S. State Department, countries for international adoption by American parents for year 2007 include –

Guatemala – 4728, China – 5453,  Russia -2310, South Korea -939, Vietnam – 828, Kazakhstan – 540, Ukraine – 606, India – 416, Colombia – 310 and Liberia – 353. Recently, Vietnam signed treaty for openings the doors for adoption.

Massachusetts family faces international adoption battle

(NECN: Alysha Palumbo, Marblehead, Mass.) – There was devastating news today for a Massachusetts family locked in an international adoption fight in Russia. The teenager thought to be headed to the US in time for the holidays has been denied a visa. Back in 2005, Keri Cahill of Marblehead, Massachusetts, adopted a 12-year-old girl from Russia named Nastia. Nastia had been abandoned as a toddler and was living in an orphanage in Siberia when she was adopted. Shortly before Nastia came to the US, she got a letter from a sister she never knew she had. When Keri found out, she made it her mission to reunite her newly adopted daughter with her older sister, Anya. She hired a private investigator, tracked Anya down, and even went to visit her in Russia. But, just as Keri was about to adopt Anya, Russia tightened its adoption laws and the adoption agency where she had spent nearly $10000 went under. Anya turned 16 and was essentially put out on her own. So, Keri has worked for the past couple of years to get her an education visa to study in America. Anya was set to fly to the US Sunday, but when she went to the American Embassy in Moscow, she was denied.
