To apply to adopt a child you must be over 21 years of age and the child must be under 18 years. if you are applying with somebody else as a joint application you will have to be married or in a civil partnership. If you are not married only one person can adopt.

Very often the adoption will be carried out through an adoption agency. They will arrange for a social worker to visit you and make a home study assessment of your family. They will take references and check out your medical records. Following the initial assessment the adoption panel will make a recommendation as to whether or not you would be a suitable adoptive parent. If you are approved the process of matching a child to your family will begin.

If you have decided not to use an adoption agency it is necessary to inform the social services department of your local council of your wish to adopt at least three months before making your application to the court. In most cases your application to the court to adopt a child will be dealt with by a specialised adoption centre. These are courts which have specialist judges and adoption officers with special training and experience in the adoption process.

When considering your application the judge will have a number of options. Very often a reporting officer will be appointed. If the current parent or guardian of the child agrees to the adoption a report will be prepared by the reporting officer to help and assist the court. The child’s best interest will be the governing principle as in all matters concerning children.

Should the child’s existing parent or guardian not agree to the adoption the court will appoint a guardian to protect the child’s best interest. The child’s guardian will make a report to the court advising on what will be in the child’s best interest and will represent the child in court. The local authority or adoption agency may also be required to provide a report which will include details about your family and the child.

About four weeks after you have lodged your application for adoption with the court a first directions hearing will be fixed. At this hearing the judge will consider amongst other things whether the application is procedurally correct, whether all necessary documentation is in place, and will fix a timetable for further consideration of your application.

If an adoption order is made by the court all legal ties between the child and his or her birth family are severed and transferred to you as the adoptive parents. Once the adoption order has been made it will be final and cannot be set aside even should the reason for the adoption turn out to be unfounded. There have been cases where allegations against the birth family have been found to be wrong after an adoption has taken place. Notwithstanding this the adoption could not be set aside.

Clarks Shoes have been making foot-friendly shoes and leading innovation since the 1800s. Founded by Cyrus Clark in the little village of Street, Somerset, Clarks began making shoes in 1830 when Cyrus’ brother James began making and selling sheepskin slippers. In the earliest years, James Clark introduced his ‘Hygienic Line’ of shoes, which followed the line and shape of the foot. In 1856, the company bought newly invented Singer sewing machines to produce shoes more efficiently.

Early on, Clarks made their reputation for stylish and comfortable shoes. That reputation was cemented in the years after World War II when the Clarks moved into the world markets. Nathan Clark introduced shoes modeled on the comfortable suede boots he and fellow army officers had found in the Cairo bazaars, and the Desert Boot became a global sensation. In the 1960s, Clarks followed up the success with the Wallabee, a simple moccasin style that quickly became a classic.

Clarks has continued to make foot-friendly shoes throughout the century, and now, nearly 180 years after the founding of Clarks, the small company that started with a pair of sheepskin slippers is one of the largest shoe manufacturers in the world. Last year, sales of Clarks shoes topped £921 million. The company employs over 12,000 employees worldwide, and makes over 41 million pairs of shoes each years.

But none of those shoes is as important to one member of the Clark family as those that are hand-stitched in South Africa by the women of the Soul of Africa organization. In 2003, Lance Clark visited a small community in South Africa that had been ravaged by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. South Africa has been hit hard by HIV, and nearly 2 million children already carry the virus. Many are already orphaned, left behind by parents who have died of HIV, and many of those orphans do not carry the virus, but live lives that have been affected by it.

While visiting South Africa in December 2003, Lance Clark met Sarah Gedye, a woman who had set up an orphanage to house children that lost their parents to the AIDS epidemic. The facility was no more than a shell in the village of Durban, in need of all basic amenities, even beds and washbasins. Clark made a personal contribution, but soon realized that so much more was needed than he could do on his own.

That realization was the start of Soul of Africa, an organization that teaches young women affected by HIV a marketable skill and helps them become independent by paying them a living wage. All the shoes made by Soul of Africa are handmade from start to finish – from the cutting of the pattern to the final hand stitching. The shoes, in several different styles, are sold throughout the UK and several other countries for £29.99 (about $70 USD), with all manufacturing profits going to support the children and families of Durban and extend the good that the orphanage can do.

To date, Soul of Africa has raised more than $1 million, all of which has been used to provide a better living environment for the children of the orphanage. Sales of Soul of Africa shoes has provided beds, linens, desks, furniture, running water, bathroom and kitchen facilities, crockery and other necessities of living.

There are plans to build more houses in conjunction with the orphanage, homes where they can live with foster mothers in stable families. The profits earned by the sale of Soul of Africa shoes have also built a school where the children can receive a good education and begin building for a better future.

The Soul of Africa program does not stop there. The young women who make the shoes are among the minority who hold regular full time jobs. Their earnings support themselves and their families, bringing them a sense of empowerment and pride and giving them a new lease on life.

Since its beginnings, Soul of Africa has set up a trust that has funded other projects, making it a seed of change in South Africa. In conjunction with the Rotary Clubs of South Africa, Soul of Africa is working on identifying providers of early childhood care in the villages and cities, and working to provide them with buildings, educational equipment, fencing, toilets, food, training and assistance with health care. The Child Development Care Centers provide much needed preschool care and day care in an area where children would otherwise often be neglected because of a lack of resources.

The Soul of Africa also funds primary school scholarships for children who would not otherwise be educated, sports scholarships to assist gifted athletes and the Granny Project to give financial aid to those women in rural areas who are trying to care for children orphaned by the AIDS epidemic.

Older readers may recall seeing a photo of Dian with two young gorillas on the cover of the January 1970 issue of the National Geographic magazine. Few know what became of the youngsters. This is their story.

It is February 1969. Dian Fossey has just rescued a young male gorilla from a corrupt park conservator in the Virungas who paid the notorious poacher Munyarukiko to acquire a young mountain gorilla for the Cologne Zoo. Dian learns that the cost of filling the “order” involved the slaughter of ten adults as they made one last stand in defense of the infant on the mist-shrouded slopes of Rwanda’s Mount Karisimbi. Dian strikes a bargain with the conservator. The infant has been horribly mutilated by the wire snares utilized to bind his hands and feet. Gangrene is a real possibility, and malnutrition and dehydration have already taken their toll. Dian agrees to nurse the infant back to health, at which time she will return the baby to the conservator for shipment to the Cologne Zoo, since the zoo has paid upfront and is still demanding its “cargo.” Her hope is that she will have time to convince authorities to return the infant to the wild.

Dian’s hopes were not destined to become reality. No sooner had Dian converted her storeroom to a gorilla rehabilitation facility, when there was a knock at her cabin door. The conservator had dispatched another baby, this one a female, of about three years of age, who had also been poached for the zoo. Dian (who had already been studying mountain gorillas for two years) immediately noticed that both gorillas had webbed toes on their right feet, which indicated that they might be from the same family. The orphans were named Coco and Pucker, and Dian Fossey embarked upon yet another episode in her life at Karisoke that started ripe with promise, but would end in tragedy. Dian’s plans to convince park authorities to allow her to release the babies back into the wild would never be realized.

On May 3, she was forced to watch as Coco and Pucker were nailed into a crate and loaded aboard an airplane for the trip to Germany. The young gorillas arrived in excellent condition, due to the care Dian had lavished upon them, but died within a month of each other after eight years of exhibition for the delight of human primates. Dian later wrote that she was certain that Coco and Pucker died of broken hearts.

Exactly twenty years after Dian’s death at the hands of unnamed assailants in 1985, a listing on an obscure gorilla list serve was noticed by a friend of IPPL who lives in the UK. A man had some photos of Coco and Pucker that were taken at the Cologne Zoo in 1974! His former girlfriend happened to see them playing in a grassy area and snapped a few shots of Coco and Pucker, all the while having no idea of the significance of the two young gorillas. Shirley McGreal wrote an email to the photographer, explaining that McGreal was a former friend of Dian’s, and that Dian’s own heart was broken by the shipment of the gorillas to the zoo and their subsequent deaths. After several aborted attempts to send the scanned photos by e-mail, the grainy, scratched, digital images arrived at IPPL. The photographer, Ria Bakker, graciously gave permission for IPPL to use the historic photos as Shirley saw fit. The photos offer a brief glimpse through a window in time. One in particular is rather chilling, showing a young gorilla standing upright and looking directly into the camera lens. Whether it is Coco or Pucker is impossible to tell, but it is almost as if the gorilla is reaching through the years, with eyes reminding the viewer of the consequences of humans’ bungled attempts to manage other species. Ria Bakker did not work at the Cologne Zoo, but was visiting in either 1973 or 1974, according to information she supplied to IPPL. Bakker was a zookeeper at the Wassenaar Zoo in the Netherlands. This zoo was forced to close down in 1986, due to financial problems.

“At that time I did not have a clue that Coco and Pucker were very special. I only noticed that they were different than the Western lowland gorillas in our zoo,” Bakker said.

“Coco and Pucker had two cages in the very old ape house, and the zookeepers took them out once a day to the playground in the grass, which was in the front of the building. They would play there with them for half an hour or so. Because the keepers knew that we were visiting from another zoo, we were allowed to be there and watch them,” Bakker explained.

More than thirty years after Ria Bakker first saw Coco and Pucker, the incident remains fresh in her memory. Her bittersweet reflection includes the memory that “the longer I worked as a zookeeper, the more aware (I became) of the situation of the gorillas in the wild. When I found out what happened with these two poor creatures, it just broke my heart,” Bakker wrote to IPPL.

An interesting footnote to this story is that the poacher of Coco and Pucker, Munyarukiko, was allegedly instrumental in the death of Dian’s beloved silverback Digit and remained an adversary of the gorillas for many years. Digit’s severed hands, feet, and head were buried outside of the poacher’s hut, but were removed before Dian and other officials could retrieve them. Only Digit’s torso is buried in the gorilla cemetery adjacent to Dian’s grave.

Adoption is when the birth parents of a child sever all legal ties to their child, and the parental rights are legally given over to the new adoptive family, who are strangers.

Apart from adopting a child from your own country, intercountry adoption is also available as there are also many children from international countries who need a family.

In the UK and the USA, children are usually given up for adoption because they have been mistreated; other reasons are due to teenage pregnancy, or because the birth parents are no longer able to look after the child, or they have given up the child because it isn’t the right sex, it has some form of disability, or because they simply don’t want a child.

There are many different reasons for wanting to adopt – if couples are unable to conceive, if they want to help others by adopting, and now there are same-sex couples who prefer to adopt.

The adoption process varies from one country to another. The ethics for eligibility can differ in each country which can include the age limit, the requirements for same-sex adoption couples, and whether a single person is able to adopt.

Placing a child into care and up for adoption is free in the United States. Adopting fees for the parents vary in different countries, and even in some, to charge an adoption fee would be illegal. In the United States, for adoptions you are given a $10,000 tax credit.

The new parents face many concerns in adoption. The child’s family history and their family medical history may be unknown, or kept secret until the child starts to ask questions about where they come from. This usually happens when a child is old enough to ask the right questions, or when they feel the need to ‘find themselves’. There are always misconcepts about children who have been fostered and this is usually fuelled by the media. Some children are thought of as not being able to develop properly or will become problem, but that is not always the case, as children can fare well when given a new,loving home and go on to lead successful lives. However, many children lose out and some reach the eighteen when they are too old to be adopted and are legally adults. They fall out of the system.

Not everyone chooses to understand or support adoption, although Americans are experienced in it. The history of adoption can be traced as far back as the 18th Century B.C. During Ancient times it was more popular to adopt adults rather than children so that they could carry on the family heritage or to protect the family’s property rights. Men and women single or married had the right to adopt.

Modern adoption laws are based on the heritage in 18th Century B.C. of the Hammurabi Code. Adopting adults was the focus in Ancient Times as a means for someone to follow in one’s footsteps; whilst the Middle Ages set some ground rules with their focus on the adoption of children. Certain laws were placed in order to protect children, so by this time adoptions were dealt with by the court systems. It was in 1851, in Massachusetts, that the first state adoption took place. Rev. Charles Loring Brace was the founder of the New York Children’s Aid Society in 1853, which helped orphaned and abandoned children. He wanted to rescue these children and transport them to good Christian homes. They were placed on Brace’s ‘Emigration Plan’ onto regular trains called the ‘Orphan Trains’ for families to view at each station, until they were taken up by one of many of the wealthy farming families.

Times have changed, although we still want the best for our children, although it is still sometimes difficult to know what that is. Adoption is one of the best things to have happened over the centuries, to give children without a home a good chance to find one.
